Piling surfboards, dogs and tents into a car and leaving town early on a Friday gives us surfers a feeling of freedom, adventure and joy. Cape Town’s own Jeffreys Bay, Elands Bay,  is only 3 hours drive up the West coast.  There’s also Silverstroom and Ysterfontein up that coast and Lambert’s Bay.

The East coast holds some more gems, mainly good in winter. Spots like Betty’s Bay in a big swell and light northery winds can make you feel complete for days if you get it good. If you don’t mind travelling, go as far as Buffels or Mossel Bay or Vic Bay just outside George.
